Guest Reviews

My favorite vacation experience

“My wife and I planned our Hawaii trip for many years. When my friend heard that we had finally decided to visit the Big Island, she said, “Why don’t you two stay at my Rainbow Ohana Guest House?” This turned out to be one of the best vacation decisions of our lives! A secluded get-away nestled on the side of the mountain, Rainbow Ohana has breathtaking views of sunsets and moon-sets over the western sea. We used Rainbow Ohana as a base for exploring the western side of the Big Island. It’s near the historic attractions of Kailua and some of the popular beaches. But we also spent a lot of time just hanging out and relaxing in the house. It felt to me as though we were house-sitting for good friends who are lucky enough to live in an exotic setting. If you are interested in capturing the sense of a community when you travel and if you want to avoid the usual tourist traps, Rainbow Ohana Guest House is definitely worth checking out.”

Rainbow Ohana – great stay!

“Rainbow Ohana is a cozy rental tucked away in a quiet neighborhood within minutes of the beaches and town of Kona. I am very happy I stayed there on my recent visit to the big island. The property is clean, tidy and comfortable. Prices are quite reasonable. I have no reservation recommending this property to others and would stay there again if I ever get the chance to return to the big island.”

A Hidden Gem

“Our family of 4 stayed here while visiting family over spring break. Even with just the one bedroom, we were able to have enough space for our 10 and 15 year old sons. We borrowed an air mattress from family and set it up in the screened porch/kitchen. That porch was a perfect spot to sit quietly at any time of day. The neighbors were all very hospitable (when met on the one lane paved road) and nights were quiet and dark—something that is rare in Kona in such an accessible place. We had everything we needed–plus a huge bunch of bananas hanging beside the front door and avocados dropping every hour. Our only regret was that mangos were not in season. If you want to experience something a bit more colorful and vivid than the usual beachfront condo, up where the breezes are cool, the people a bit more real, with kids, chickens and dogs all living life along St Paul Rd. (go slow!) this is a great spot to stay. Teshima’s restaurant (out by the highway) is a local icon as well as Manago Hotel’s dining room (to the south in Captain Cook) These places are basic, down home food with few frills, both of which give you a taste of the way people who live here dine. Excellent more “upscale” restaurants are Jackie Ray’s Ohana Grill (on Kuakini Hwy above Kailua) and Annie’s at Mango Court just past Kainaliu (burgers etc) Keei Cafe (cash only) a couple miles south of Kainaliu. In between ($ wise) is Big Island Grill (their B.I.G. salad with fresh catch is exquisite). Best supermarket is KTA at Keahou Mall. If you like organics try Island Naturals (Kainaliu and Kailua) Best body surfing in Kona is at White Sands on Alii Dr. Best old time Hawaii beach (waves, snorkeling, clean water, views, dolphins) is Ho’okena Beach in South Kona–a nice break if you are driving to the volcano. All the local beaches have been cleaned up a lot in recent years. They are better patrolled and there is much less drinking and loitering than there used to be. We did not have any concerns with the rental that required attention but the on-island manager was just a phone call away. I would recommend the rental to others. We had a great time and plan to return.”

“We had the pleasure of staying a month in this cottage and just as past visitors have stated, it is quite roomy. Every comfort seems to have been thought of, happy art everywhere, good books, good videos, beach chairs, really all the comforts of home plus more. It most certainly was an all around good experience for us. The few things that did come up in a month long stay, were quickly and efficiently handled by on island caretakers and a property manager, and these were very minor. The cooler temps at this location would make summer especially nice here. Many GREAT snorkling beaches within 30 minutes or less and about 15 minutes to Holualoa (great art town). We would love to return again. Mahalo for sharing this lovely space.”

“We loved the location of this great get-away. The surrounding fruit trees and lush vegetation are beautiful. Thanks for sharing your home with us. PS: Thanks, too, for the fresh fruit and fresh-cut flowers. It was a lovely way to arrive after all of the travel.”

“I had a wonderful stay! The cottage is immaculately clean and more spacious than the pictures indicated. Each day I discovered another piece of art, thoughtfully placed. The weather was great too with surprisingly cool nights at this elevation. I hope to return and see some more of the “Big Island”. Thanks!”

“This was so relaxing! Great location, easy to get anywhere from. Love your cottage Beth. Would stay here again. Mahalo!”
